Horseback Archery

The Yabusame Ritual Blends the Archers' Skill with History

Archers in flowing Heian garb gallop atop horses on the sacred ground at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine. An Arrow in flight puts skill, spectacle and tradition on display.

Every autumn, Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is  home to one of Japan’s most dramatic rituals: Yabusame, the art of horseback archery. Mounted riders, clad in ornate Heian-period robes, charge down the shrine’s long gravel approach, loosing arrows at wooden targets in a breathtaking blend of martial skill and spiritual ritual. Each strike isn’t just sport—it’s a prayer, an offering to the gods for safety, prosperity, and good fortune.

The ceremony has roots stretching back to the Kamakura era, when it was practiced as both military training and sacred rite. Today, its visual drama—the thundering hooves, the archer’s steady poise, the crowd’s breathless silence—makes it one of the most striking ways to encounter Japan’s living traditions.

While the event was last held at Osaka Tenmangu in 2024, it was not scheduled in 2025, as the shrine focused on other major festivals such as the Tenjin Matsuri. Enthusiasts did however catch glimpses of the tradition in April 2025, during a special demonstration tied to Expo Osaka-Kansai. But this pause only builds anticipation for its expected return in October 2026, when Tenmangu once again becomes a stage for arrows in flight.

For visitors, it’s an opportunity to step into an ancient pageant, where every shot embodies both the precision of a warrior and the prayer of a devotee.
