Shitennō-ji Hatsu-e & Temple Market

A New Year tradition at Osaka’s oldest temple

After the crowds of early January fade, Shitennō-ji welcomes visitors back for Hatsu-e — a traditional New Year observance paired with temple market days, seasonal street food, and a slower, more reflective atmosphere in the heart of Tennoji, enjoyed by locals, foreign residents, and inbound visitors alike.

Founded in the 6th century, Shitennō-ji holds a special place in Osaka’s spiritual life as the city’s oldest Buddhist temple. Each January, it hosts Hatsu-e (初会) — the temple’s first major Buddhist assembly of the New Year — drawing locals and long-term foreign residents back to the grounds after the initial New Year rush.

Held annually on January 21 and 22, Hatsu-e is accompanied by one of Shitennō-ji’s regular temple market days, transforming the spacious grounds into a calm but lively gathering space. Unlike the dense street energy of Tōka Ebisu, this event feels open and unhurried, with wide walkways, food stalls scattered across the precinct, and visitors moving at a relaxed pace.

Stalls line the temple grounds selling traditional snacks such as grilled mochi, dango, and warm amazake, alongside simple winter street foods. Many visitors combine prayer with casual eating, making the market as much a social outing as a religious one.

For inbound visitors and foreign residents living in Osaka, Shitennō-ji’s January market offers a gentle entry point into local seasonal culture. Crowds are manageable, the atmosphere is respectful, and the temple’s central location makes it easy to combine with sightseeing in Tennoji, Abeno, or Tenshiba.
